Antique 19th C Asian Woodblock Print by Shachihoko
Antique Asian Japanese woodblock print. Hand colored original 19th century woodblock Japanese print illustrating a group of Samurai warriors in a street scene. This vintage castle scene shows a shachihoko (mythical creatures with a dragon head and a fish body) on the tower roof ridge a Japanese castle. Shachihoko were signs of the prestige and authority of the castle lord, and were thought to protect the castle from fire. I cannot identify the series that this original work is from but it is an original period piece from the 19th century.
This vintage Japanese print would make a great addition to your vintage asian artwork collection, or a great unique housewarming or birthday gift.. This would make a great graduation gift framed for an art or Asian studies major.
