Antique Father Mathew Temperance Movement Coin
Antique Temperance movement coin. Struck on the obverse side with the bust of the very reverend father Theobald Mathew, this coin was a reminder to instruct children in the merits in alcohol temperance. Children who obey their parents would never fall into the path of drunkenness.
This may seem unlikely today but during the 19th century working children were often drinking from 12 years old. A lot of factories permitted mobile rum and beer vendors to sell their alcohol to their employees which often led to drunkenness and accidents in the workplace.
Marked on front: Children Obey Your Parents, The very Rev Theobold Mathew
Marked on back: Children trained in the paths of total abstinence will never become drunkards
A great addition to any Temperance movement or coin collection. This would make a great gift for Christmas or birthday.
