Antique Set of Cassowary Bone Head Hunting Tipped Arrows ~ Papua New Guinea
Original antique primitive set of four native arrows from Papua New Guinea. Cut from bamboo and black palm wood these intricately decorated arrows are all tipped with Cassowary bone heads. Bound using traditional blood and ash binding these hollow tipped arrows were used in both hunting and warfare. Dating to the first quarter of the 20th century this collection was acquired in New Guinea from natives in the 1970's by the previous owner.
This was part of a collection from the estate of Dr Dan Shaw, CA.
Dan Shaw, an American missionary-linguist-anthropologist who lived with the Samo people from 1970 until 1982, learned their language and did translation work. Dan was initiated as a Samo brother in 1973.

Arrows range from 52" long 52.75", 53" and 53.5" and weighs 5oz.
