Framed Landscape Oil Paintings by John Horace Hooper (1800s)
Antique large framed oil on canvas piece of wall art by noted British artist John Horace Hooper. Large titled painting is called "landscape in Sussex" portraying a rural haywain scene of gathering crops for the grain mill in the background. It is inferred that the miller is harvesting the crop as the windmill is in a closed position during the day. Realistic landscape painters like Hooper are indicative of the broad strokes painting in situ that was popular in England and the continent during this period. Signed in the bottom left corner J Horace Hooper. A Victorian inscription on the back states the name of the painting as a Sussex landscape (a very fine piece) and the name Molmot.
Hooper was an industrious painter during his Victorian lifetime. John Horace Hooper was born in 1850 in or around London, England. He was a landscape artist painting in a broad, realistic style, similar to that of the well known British artist, Henry John Kinnaird, who apparently influenced him.
Hooper began to exhibit at the important venues in 1877 and continued to do so until 1899. He exhibited six times at The Royal Academy which included views of Mapledurham, Pangbourne and Sonning. He also exhibited at The Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool, The Royal Hibernian Academy and The Arthur Tooth & Sons Gallery.
Several dates pertaining to Hoopers lifespan are in circulation, but it is universally accepted that he was born between 1830-51 and died between 1899-1913. A great addition to your British , Victorian landscape art collection or as a piece of investment art.
