Vintage Arts & Crafts American Motawi Tileworks Bird Signed Tile Art Dard Hunter
DESCRIPTION
Vintage American art tiles. Manufactured by the Motawi tileworks in Ann Arbor, MI this framed trio of art tiles depicts a blackbird on either side of a long stemmed floral scene on the central tile. Known as the songbird and long stem set these tiles are colored in a jade background and encompassed in a quartersawn oak frame. Even though this set is arts and crafts in style it is much later in date.
This lyrical trio was inspired by a book jacket cover by Talwin Morris, who designed for English publisher Blackie and Sons in the late 19th century. These tile frames are made by Dard Hunter Studios, founded by early Roycrofter Dard Hunter and run by his grandson, Dard Hunter III.
Each tile is marked Motawi Tileworks, Anne Arbor, MI on the back
