Antique Primitive Folk Art Whaling Oil on Panel Painting Signed by R Costa 1840s
Antique primitive Folk Art oil painting. Depicting a large whale and three masted ships in the arctic regions this oil on wooden board has all the characteristics of primitive art. This antique oil on panel painting was painted and signed by the artist R Costa on the bottom right of the painting. Framed in its original period frame this piece is believed to date to the 1820's -1880's due to style and materials. The high skyline with clouds and icebergs would suggest the arctic circle for a backdrop location.
Signed bottom right: R Costa
I did locate another painting by the same artist: ‘Whale with a Long Tail,’ painted by ship’s cook R. Costa, c. 1840 which is currently housed in the Shelburne Museum.
This would make a great addition to your eclectic home, shop or restaurant decor.
MEASUREMENTS
Framed painting measures 18.5" wide by 16.25" tall by 1.25" deep and weighs 3lb 9oz.

CONDITION
This painting is in nice condition considering age. There is some chipping to the oil paint, there appears to be a paint smudge down near the bottom right and the painting would definitely benefit from a professional cleaning (please see all pictures as they form part of the condition description).
